We give Satan way too much credit. Is he evil? Sure. Does he hate you? Absolutely. Is he going to do everything possible to keep you away from God? You bet. Can he make you do anything? Absolutely not. From cartoons and pop psychology we view our conscience as a little devil on one shoulder and a little angel on the other and to be honest this couldn’t be further from the truth. For it to be more accurate we could go ahead and keep that angel on the one shoulder, although the Holy Spirit isn’t an angel He is every bit God as Jesus and Father are, but on the other shoulder should just be us. All the imagery we are given of Satan is predatory. He will look for any weakness in our commitment and use that to tear us apart. But is he in your head trying to get you to do things that are wrong? Nope. That little voice in your head that sounds familiar sounds that way because its your own voice. In the first chapter of James it says that we shouldn’t blame God when we are tempted. I want to take that one step further and say we shouldn’t blame Satan either. Because right after he says don’t blame God, James says you are drawn away by YOUR own evil desire. Its far to easy and WAY too dangerous to just say that Satan put the idea in your head. If its his fault you don’t have to take any of the responsibility. If he put it in there you don’t need to change anything to get it out. Make no mistake it is not Satan that will drag you away from God, you will. Satan is powerful and evil, but he can’t make you do anything you don’t already want to do. Become the Target.
