There is no such thing as moderate Christianity

So which one of you would like to call Jesus a liar? I’m not thinking I’ll get too many volunteers on that one.  Jesus said in John 10:10 that he came so that we might have life to the full. He also said that though he gives the gift freely, that means he is perfectly willing to give the gift, the gift is not free. It comes at a cost. And it costs us everything. We don’t like to think about the extreme costs involved in Christianity because if we realize just what is required we might not be so comfortable wearing the name of Christ. Christ told a rich guy to sell everything he had and follow him. He told another person to not worry about burying his parents. He also said anyone who would put his hand to the plow and look back was not worthy of him. What that means is anyone who would set out to follow Christ and then look back longingly at the life they had before him isn’t worthy of the gift. It all sounds kind of extreme and harsh doesn’t it? Well that’s because it is. I don’t think we understand just exactly what God’s love does when we let it. We don’t want to be extremists. We don’t want to be extravagantly lost in God’s love. It’s scary. The fact of the matter is if we really understood what it is we were getting we would willingly give up anything. Jesus once told a story that there was a man who found a great treasure in a field. The only thing was that to buy that field he would have to give up everything he had. So you know what the guy did? He put the field on layaway only giving little bits of what he had at a time so that he could have the field but it didn’t have to effect his life. Wait no that’s not what happened. He willingly went back and gave everything he had for that field and then my bet is threw a huge party when he did because he realized that what he gave up was worth nowhere near what he was getting. Following Christ isn’t easy and free but it is worth so much more than anything you can do for yourself. But it comes at a cost. It will cost you everything. And I mean it should shouldn’t it? Christ thought it was worth his life just to be able to give it to you. Become The Target.
